Josephine M. Gowan

1936 - 2023

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our mother, Josephine M. (Noddin) Gowan of Lincourt Manor, St. Stephen, on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. Born in 1936 in Pleasant Ridge, Josephine was the daughter of the late Fred and Lela (Goss) Noddin.

Mum will be sadly missed by her children; Elaine Whittier of St. Andrews, Eugene (Kathy) Gowan of Elmsville, Steven (Carla) Gowan of St. Stephen, Belinda Oram of Hampton, William (Venus) Gowan of Saint John, Mary Elliott of Elmsville, and Heather Leavitt of Waweig. She will also be profoundly missed by her precious grandchildren; Cindy Nickerson, Laurie Whittier (Aaron), Eugene Gowan Jr.(Heidi), Brittany Noble (Tim), Shane Gowan (Marie), Joshua Gowan (Carrie), Shawna Harris (Zack), Tina Canavan (Luke), Shawn Appleby (Amy), Jessica O'Neill (Andrew), Geoff Oram, Nathaniel Porter-Gowan, Christian Gowan (Jessica), Byrann Gowan (Jenna), Sarah Legacy, Joey Legacy (Tasha), Tamara Dunphy (Peter), Sasha Leavitt, Jeremy Leavitt (Heather), and Brandon Leavitt (Ashley). She is also survived by several great-grandchildren, and one great- great-grandchild. Josephine is also survived by one sister, Ruth Thomas: sister- in-law, Donna Noddin and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

Josephine was predeceased by the love of her life, Byron Gowan; her infant daughter Angela, as well as siblings, Freda Johnson, Verna Whittier, Cecil (Jake) Noddin, Ed Noddin, and Jean McLeod.

Mum always loved having her grandchildren around, with evenings at the fire pit at her home in Elmsville. In later years, she got to enjoy a few winters in Florida, which she always spoke fondly of, spending time with her special friend Fay, and many other acquaintances she made while there. Mum also had many friends at Shoreside Haven (formerly McLay’s Special Care Home) where she resided for several years, and they will miss her dearly. 

Special thanks go out to former and present-day staff at Shoreside Haven, and to staff at Lincourt Manor, who were entrusted with Mum's care over the past several years. Also, special thanks to Dr. Hameed of St. George, who had a very special relationship with Mum over the years.

To honor and celebrate Mum's life,a funeral service will be held at The S.O. Mehan & Son Funeral Home Ltd., 23 Main Street, St. Stephen, N.B. on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 2 P.M. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, January 27, 2023 from 6-8 PM.

All are welcome to attend the interment service that will take place immediately following the funeral service, at the Lower Elmsville Historic Cemetery (Roix Road), as well as a short reception to follow at Christ Church Hall in Elmsville.
