After living a long and honorable life of 96 years, the family of J. Douglas “Doug” Hansen sadly announce their father’s passing on Sunday November 30, 2025, at the Charlotte County Hospital St Stephen, NB.
Born in Saint John, NB in 1929, he was the third son of his late parents, Edward “Ned” and Elsie Hansen and the husband of his late wife; Betty Hansen.
Doug completed his early schooling in Saint John at St Peters Boy School and then graduated from Saint John Vocational School in 1946. He then began his successful 44 year career as an Insurance Adjuster; 17 years in Saint John and 27 years in St Stephen, before retiring in 1990.
It was in 1951, when Doug married his sweetheart, Betty at St Peter’s Church in Saint John. Doug and Betty have 4 children; 3 sons and a daughter, all born in Saint John, NB.
Throughout his entire life, Doug was an avid sports enthusiast. In his younger years he played softball and had an outstanding career playing basketball with eastern Canadian champion Saint John Atlantics, followed later, by many years enjoying bowling and golfing. He also loved cheering for his children and grandchildren as they competed in their favorite sports.
Dad was always a very social person, relishing in his interactions with others and forming many lasting friendships with people in his community.
With his family and friends, Doug lived life to the fullest, enjoying regular family gatherings and frequently attending community events.
Serving the people in his community was always very important to Dad…in Saint John and St Stephen he helped maintain community outdoor rinks and coached little league baseball teams.
For many years he was an active member of the Lions Club and Rotary Club in St Stephen and St Stephen-Milltown Town Councils, including 12 years as the town’s mayor.
Doug’s family are celebrating his long life as a tremendous success and grand achievement of longevity. He will be forever remembered as a loving and devoted husband, a caring and compassionate father and a gracious and noble grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather.
Doug will be sadly missed by his surviving family members, his 4 children; Drew (Gloria) Hansen of Charlottetown, PEI, Mark (Ginette) Hansen of St Stephen, NB, Kim (Wendy) Stringer-Hansen of Cobourg, ON, and Ed (Lorrie) Hansen of Burnaby, BC, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law; Myrna Drew of Lower Sackville, NB, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Doug was predeceased by his two brothers; Norman Hansen (Phyllis) and Raymond Hansen (Mary), brother-in-law; Fred Drew and nephew; Glenn Hansen.
In keeping with their father’s wishes, the Hansen family members will be celebrating his life at a private Catholic Requiem Mass for Doug, at a future date.
The family would like to thank Dr.Lalik, the Charlotte County Hospital doctors and CCU nurses; and the staff of Chipman Apartments and Lonicera Hall in St Stephen, for all the care, kindness and support they had given to our father, Doug over the last number of years.
In Doug’s memory, donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice. Condolences to the family can be sent to the family online at mehanfuneralhome.ca
