E. Allan Gillmor died at the Charlotte County Hospital on
Sunday, December 22, 2024. Allan was born at the Chipman
Memorial Hospital, in 1944, the son of the late Leo Gillmor and
Winifred (McMahon) Gillmor, and stepson of Anna (Spearin) Gillmor, who
became responsible for Allan’s upbringing.
Allan attended St. Francis Xavier University and the
University of New Brunswick before embarking on a teaching career,
beginning at Simonds High School, followed by thirty years of teaching
in St. Stephen. During his university years, and during his
first few years of teaching, Allan spent six summers working at the
Algonquin in St. Andrews. The Algonquin was always
considered a special place by Allan. It was at this time that he met,
and married Susan Maunder and they were blessed with seven
children.
Allan was predeceased by his wife, Susan in 2008, his son
Gregory in 2013, his daughter Anna and grandson Charles in
2017. He is survived by daughters; Gillian; Anna’s
husband, Howie Emerson and their children; Grace, James and Kate;
Monica (John Ewart) and their children; Ryan, Brooklyn, Courtney, Kara
and Joel; Christina, Charlotte (Guillaume Lepage) and their children;
Madelyn, Libby, Leo and Max, son Mark (Jenna) and their children
Nathan and Erin, his foster daughter Margie (Lee) (Tim Snell) and
their sons Jonathan and Mathew. Allan is also survived by
his brother-in -law; Stephen Maunder (Wilma) and sister-in-law Doreen
Maunder.
Allan had a great love of his community and helped in any way
to see it prosper. He was a member of Holy Rosary Parish,
serving as Parish Council. He took great pride in the town
and county, having served on Charlotte County Historical Society,
Charlotte County Museum, Charlotte Heritage Region Organization, The
Ste-Croix 2004 Organizing Committee, The Chocolate Museum and The
Charlotte County Archives.
The economic health of the community was always important to
Allan. He was an advocate serving to better the community
through the Saint John Fundy Regional Development Commission,
Enterprise Charlotte, Development St. Stephen and the St. Stephen Area
Chamber of Commerce, serving many years on town council as both
councilor and mayor, as well as Chairing the St. Croix Estuary
Project/Ganong Nature Park.
Allan will be remembered as a father, grandfather, educator,
community supporter and an appreciator of the geography and history of
his community.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Stephen’s
Catholic Church, 407 Milltown Blvd St Stephen, NB at 11 AM on Monday,
December 30th, 2024. Visiting hours
will be held at The S.O. Mehan & Son Funeral Home Ltd., 23
Main Street, St Stephen, N.B. on Sunday, December
29th from 6 – 8 PM.
