Surrounded by those who loved and cared for her most, Sarah Burns, known affectionately by her friends and family as Sally, passed away comfortably on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at the Charlotte County Hospital. Sally married her soulmate Harold Burns, of St. Stephen, NB, in 1952. This September, she will be celebrating her 71st wedding anniversary reunited with him.

Born Sarah A. McKay to Wilbur McKay and Charlotte Caswell in 1933, Sally grew up in the community of Barter Settlement. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, T. Wilbur "Mickey" McKay (Christine), Barbara Dow (Jack), Richard McKay and Philip "Buddy" McKay (Ella), her husband, Harold, as well as her son Gerald "Jerry" Burns and his wife Karen Cliffe.

Sally is survived by her daughter Mary Jane Mosher (John), her granddaughters Charlotte Mosher and Candace Mosher (Anderson), sister-in-law, Harriet McKay, brothers–in law, Tracy Burns (Joyce) and Gary Burns (Marie), Megan Groom (Chris), several nieces and nephews, as well as her beloved dog Joey.

Sally wore many hats throughout her more than 89 years on earth. In addition to being a wife and mother, she could be found working at the Cotton Mill in Milltown, alongside her husband selling ice, at the B&M Market, the local RCMP detachment, or managing the Kings Court Apartments in St. Stephen.

Sally was a lifetime member of the Kirk McColl United Church Women organization with many decades of dedicated service to the church's youth, patrons, and the local community. Sally had been a member of Kirk McColl for almost 30 years when the church she had been married in burnt to the ground in 1980, and she was called to be a member of the Rebuilding Committee that established the church that her daughter would later be married in. If she wasn’t serving up meals for family and friends at home, she could be found in the kitchen at Kirk McColl serving her peers, or at the family camp where she and Harold would spend every hunting season. In her later years, she enjoyed keeping an eye on the goings on in her neighborhood as the founding member of the unofficial neighborhood watch.

Sally’s greatest joys in life came from her roles as mother and grandmother. It’s hard to remember a Wednesday after school that didn’t involve dinner at Grammies before church choir; something Charlotte and Candace affectionately referred to as "Grammie Day."

The family will receive friends and loved ones at The S.O Mehan & Son Funeral Home Ltd., 23 Main St, St. Stephen, NB on Wednesday May 31, 2023 from 6- 8 PM. The funeral and reception will be held at Kirk McColl United Church on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 11 AM.

Interment at the St. Stephen Rural Cemetery, St. Stephen, N.B.

For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations in Sally’s memory can be made to the charitable organization of your choice.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation for the care given to Sally by the doctors and staff at Charlotte County Hospital, Extra Mural, Home Support, Ambulance New Brunswick, long-time neighbors Albert and Delia Fairweather, special niece Dorothy "Dottie" Fairweather, and caregiver Charlene Mosher Crossman.
