After a sudden illness, Reva Avery passed away on May 22, 2022 at Saint John Regional Hospital with her daughter at her side. Reva led a very full and active life right up to a few days before her passing. Thought she is physically gone her spirit lives on in Heaven. Reva had always known where she would go when her time came and was at peace in the end.

Reva led a very full life and was the most giving person she could be. After retiring from Canada Border Services, when she was 55, Mom always had projects lined up. For a few years she and Hartley would make and sell crafts at flea markets and cruise ships in St. John. Quilting was her other favorite hobby. Over the years she made quilts for most all of their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, newlyweds, graduates. As well, she would make quilts for fundraisers such as MADD, the Transition House, or Food Bank, and always had one or two spare quilts just in case she felt someone could use a kindness, in all she had given away nearly 180 quilts over the years. Many may not know this, but Mom also loved to watch NASCAR every weekend, she had her favorites and would also root for the underdog. We had great times!

In 1974 Reva and her mother Ida began the Valley Gospel Singers. Everyone could pick them from a crowd with their signature red blazers. They would sing at nursing homes, hospitals, festivals, halls, most anywhere they would fit, there were as many as 20 in the group at any given time. They would never take payment for this but would accept donations. On September 24, 2016 they were inducted into the NB Gospel Music Hall of Fame, Mercy Award for their unselfish sacrifice of time and sharing. Each year they would take all the donations and donate to a local charity, over the years they donated over $40,000. Though the group slowed over the last few years they were a topic of frequent conversation.

Her other great love was God. Anyone that new Reva, even briefly, could see and feel her faith. She faithfully went to church every Sunday unless weather or circumstance prevented her from going. She always had a copy of Daily Bread in her purse if she felt someone needed a little spiritual guidance or re-assurance. She was a fisher of men. Reva would pray for anyone, anywhere if she felt the need. Her hands were soft as silk and full of love and tenderness, just like her spirit. Mom saw the good in everyone no matter what their place in life was and never said or thought negatively and would only wish they find peace in some way. She led many to God over her time here and would be amazed every time for knowing their spirit would someday meet Him.

Reva was predeceased by her husbands, Hartley E. Avery Sr., and Richard W. McKay Sr., her parents Arnold and Ida Purdy, Grandchildren Coby MacDonald, Lindsey Jade, Ryan  & Christopher.
