It is with great sadness the family of Joseph “Joe” N. Hansen announces his passing on Saturday January 3, 2026, at the Charlotte County Hospital St. Stephen, NB.
Joe was born in St. Stephen, NB to the late Hugo and Helen Hansen.
A proud Scotch Ridger, Joe was a notorious jokester who loved to tease and carry on with anyone he could—the more he teased you, the more he liked you.
Joe was a skilled and talented craftsman who loved to tinker in his workshop. Prior to his illness, you would often find him happily puttering away at a project. He was meticulous and paid close attention to detail. We are fortunate to have his creations, which now will hold even more meaning.
Joe worked as a millwright in various locations throughout Charlotte County and retired from Skretting in 2018, where he made some great friends. He had an ability to figure out just about anything, often approaching problems with an “outside-the-box” rationale.
In years past, Joe was an avid fisherman and loved canoeing the St. Croix River, having completed the trip in its entirety several times. He was also known for trimming up competitors at the pool table and was always up for a game.
Many games of crib were played around the kitchen table, where Joe taught many of us how to play—never refusing a chance at a game. Joe enjoyed the simple life and found joy in little things, like a country ridge run or simply sitting and watching the Mohannes Stream flow by, or “Marble Brook,” as he called it.
Joe always had a story to share and would invite you to “pull up a stump” and have a yarn. His witty one-liners and unique sayings will be fondly remembered. He had a special ability to make anyone laugh. When Joe answered the phone, it was never a simple “hello,” but a booming, “Good day!!”
Family gatherings will never be the same, as his departure leaves a large void that can never be filled.
Lastly, it just can't go with out saying...Joe had, what we will call, an interesting palate and adventurous way of cooking. You just never knew what he was cooking up in that kitchen! Whatever he prepared always, no matter what, contained onions. Lots of onions!
Joe is survived by his loving wife; Sheah, his children, both by blood and by choice; daughter Annette Rubin (Josh) of Calgary, Alberta; son Justin Hansen (Jacqueline) of Waterboro, Maine; Jennifer Crilley (Dave) of Chance Harbour, New Brunswick; Meredith Cunningham (Ryan) of Scotch Ridge, New Brunswick; Theresa Sprague; and Douglas Sprague, along with their respective families, grandfather to McKenzie Tilton, Mitchell and Alexis McLean, Libby and Warren Hansen, Cara McLeod (Jesse), Brady McLeod (Abby), and to Hunter and Hayden Greenier, he was also blessed with great-grandchildren; Jayden Morrison-Lee, Brinley Lee, and Colter McLeod; his sister; Janet Campbell brothers; Rick Hansen (Debbie) and Jim Hansen, his cat; Flip, who already feels his absence, several nephews and nieces.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you, to the Extra Mural Nurses, who attended to Joe during his illness. You all were greatly appreciated. In addition, we thank the staff at the Charlotte County Hospital - Critical Care Unit, for their excellent care shown to Joe.
A service will be at the Scotch Ridge United Church, Scotch Ridge, NB, at a later date.
Interment will be held at the Pomeroy Ridge Cemetery Pomeroy Ridge, NB.
