Robert “Bob” W. Scott

1946 - 2024

Bob’s life was dedicated to his love of family, nature and his gardens.

Born to the late Sylvia (Williams) and Harry Scott, he grew up in Oak Bay, NB with his siblings Harry, Berkeley, Sylvia and Brenda.  With his wife, Sue (O’Leary), he raised three sons (Ben, Nathaniel and Shane) and later welcomed their wives (Mary-Pat, Josée, and Rebecca) into the family as daughters. His five grandchildren (Noah, Eliott, Nick, Elizabeth and Eamon) gave him the greatest of pleasure in the last 12 years.  They were the recipients of innumerable GrandBob hugs and cuddles, fresh vegetables from his garden, storytelling, homemade bread, and lots of jokes.  His face lit up whenever they visited, and the joy he felt in their presence was truly palpable.  His happiest moments were spent when all of his family gathered together at the Scott home on Kerrs Ridge in summertime.

Bob’s devotion to family was instilled by his parents.  In their later years, Bob was a source of constant support, doing house repairs and chores, providing drives, helping plant gardens, playing cards and crib, or just sitting for a tea and sympathy.

His sons learned well from him how to be both exceptional dads and devoted sons. Their love for Bob was shown best by their extraordinary support and loving care during his illness this summer.

Bob enjoyed many family occasions over the years, whether with the Scott or O’Leary clan, where interaction provided lots of laughs and camaraderie.

Bob and Sue shared a particularly memorable trip to Ireland with the O’Leary sisters and their husbands in 2004, stories of which are always followed by much laughter.

Bob worked for the provincial government but was happiest working in his gardens and crop shelters on Kerrs Ridge, supplying vegetables to the St. Andrews market from its inception, when it was located at the arena. He enjoyed the country way, sharing his vegetables and talking with his neighbours.  Traffic slowed to get a second look at the splendour of his beautiful English country garden. His work on the home and gardens was a labour of love and part of his enduring legacy to his family.

The love of Bob’s life was Sue.  They met in 1965 in a summer romance at the Algonquin Hotel, and as Bob said, he has loved her ever since.  They married in 1970 in Fredericton and settled on Kerrs Ridge in 1976.  A lifetime of meeting challenges together and celebrating their many achievements ensued.  Bob enjoyed being Sue’s plus one on her work trips. They traveled to Norway, London, Paris, Spain, Scotland, Ireland, California, Hawaii, New York, South Beach, Key West and many destinations in Canada, including favourites like Vancouver and Victoria.  He loved to sample his favourite dish, spaghetti bolognese, at every destination he could.  He is fondly remembered for always bringing rolls of coins with him on these trips to give to those living in the streets.

Bob’s family is devastated, but also very aware that because of him a great love has been generated that will keep us strong together.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

A special thanks to the Eastern Charlotte Extramural Unit and the Palliative Unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital.

For those wishing to donate in Bob’s memory, the Salvation Army was his favourite charity. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.mehanfuneralhome.com
