Donald Murray Downey

DOWNEY- At the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, NB. on November 7, 2016, Donald Murray Downey at the age of 87, husband of Lois Shirley (Smith) Downey and the son of the late Loran B. and Annie R. (Clark) Downey passed away peacefully with his family at his side.

Survived by his wife of 67 years, his sons; Steven Downey (Brenda) of Fredericton, Murray Downey (Melody) of Saint John, Larry Downey (Debbie), Allan Downey (Janet), Mark Downey (Tanya) all of St. Stephen, grandchildren; Karen Gingrich (Matt) , Michael Downey (Tammy), Christopher Downey (Daphne), Geoff Downey (Michelle), Amanda Speedy (Jason), Erica Beckwith, (Kevin), Ryan Downey (Danielle), Bradley Downey, Allana Downey, Madison Downey and sixteen great grandchildren, two brothers; Kenneth Downey (Shirley), Richard Downey, two sisters; Louise Samms (Larry), Brenda Thornton (Dale), several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers; Robert Downey, Perley Downey, sisters; Jean Smith, Marion Stewart and Barbara Downey and great granddaughter, Cassandra Downey.

In his early years he worked at the Coca Cola plant in St. Stephen, then he went to work as a delivery driver for Karnes Bakery in Woodstock, NB, until his retirement several years later. Don was a friend to all who knew him and was a long time member and Past President of the Legion Branch # 9, where he and Lois enjoyed playing and organizing the dart tournaments, after his retirement, he also enjoyed tending Bar. He was also a long time member of Sussex Lodge # 7 F & AM and the Luxor Shriners Clown Unit. Don always enjoyed dressing as a clown and entertaining the children at town parades and events where ever the Shriners appeared.

The family wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to the Nurses of Floor one and the CCU at Charlotte County Hospital and also the Extra Mural Nurses and Home Support Staff. Your empathy and kindness will never be forgotten.

Funeral service will be held at The S. O. Mehan and Son Funeral Home Ltd. 23 Main Street St. Stephen, NB on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 11 AM.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 10-11 AM. Royal Canadian Legion Branch #9 will hold a Tribute Service on Thursday at 10:45 AM.

For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the St. Stephen Legion Branch #9 or to the Charlotte County Cancer Society.
