John Melvin Russell

John Melvin Russell

It is with great sadness the family of John Melvin Russell "Mel" announces his peaceful passing at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville, NB on Tuesday June 14, 2016 just 3 months shy of his 97th year.

Mel was born in Oak Hill, NB, September 15, 1919, the son of Frederick and Winnifed (Nolan) Russell and resided there on the family farm for most of his life. In the last few years of their lives, he and Ina had moved to Carleton County due to declining health.

Mel was married 67 years to the love of his life, Ina (Vail) and they raised two children: Sheila Lloyd (Douglas) , and Brian Russell (Gail).

He is survived by his children, six grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren, siblings in law, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Elva (Walter) Hanson, and his granddaughter Amy Lloyd. Mel was a quiet thoughtful man with a reputation of being a hardworking, down to earth man of integrity, manners, and kindness. He would do anything to help anyone out. He loved his family and the land and animals. Mel was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, The OddFellows, and Oak Hill United Church. He worked as a dairy farmer on the family farm. His hobby was a passion - Mel raised and raced horses for harness racing - he had many horses including Misty Peg, Paynter's Pride, Winnie R, Shemar Lorna, and Nibble Tag to name a few. Several had set records in their day. He enjoyed his church, his family and in later years also worked maintenance at Oak Bay and the St Stephen Tourism Center. His smile was contagious, his word his bond, and he was loved and respected by any who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. His gentle nature, endless patience, and thoughtful kindness made him a loving proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather and a favourite of all of his nurses while in hospital. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Funeral Service for Mel will be held at The S.O. Mehan & Son Funeral Home Ltd. , 23 Main Street, St. Stephen, N.B., Friday June 17, 2016 at 2 pm with Rev. Toben Steeves of Holmesville Free Will Baptist Church officiating.
